About HarborSignal

Free maritime intelligence for macro traders and analysts

What is HarborSignal?

HarborSignal is a free, publicly accessible maritime data platform. It monitors vessel traffic at nine major global ports and two critical chokepoints — the Panama Canal and Suez Canal — using live AIS (Automatic Identification System) transponder data updated every six hours.

When vessel counts or congestion scores deviate meaningfully from recent baselines, the platform uses Claude AI to generate a plain-English signal describing the anomaly, the likely cause, and the assets most likely to be affected — shipping stocks, energy futures, and commodity ETFs.

Why does port congestion matter to traders?

Global commodity markets are downstream of physical trade flows. When tankers queue up outside Ras Tanura, it signals something is happening to Saudi crude exports before it appears in any official report. When container ships pile up at LA/Long Beach, freight rates are about to move. When LNG carriers cluster at Sabine Pass, US natural gas supply is getting tighter.

This kind of data has historically been the domain of expensive institutional platforms like Kpler and Vortexa, priced at thousands of dollars per month. HarborSignal makes the same underlying signal accessible to anyone, for free.
